Learn how to use a standardised assessment instrument, APTITUDE TEST FOR SCHOOL BEGINNERS (ASB).
Assess groups of grade R learners to determine if they are cognitively ready to learn to write and read in the language of teaching and learning (LOLT) of grade 1.
The ASB consists of 8 subtests.
Perception
The purpose of this test is to determine the grade R learner’s visual perception. Emphasis is on analytical observation and the ability to distinguish between similarities and differences in pictures. This ability is essential for reading and writing proficiency.
Spatial
This test measures a pupil’s ability to rotate a given figure mentally in a specific manner. It is generally accepted that spatial orientation and the ability to visualize are essential primary abilities for general success at school.
Reasoning
By means of this test concept formation, logical thinking and the ability to classify are assessed. Since comprehension and logical thinking are important aspects of the learning process this test should predict success at school.
Numerical
The test provides an indication of the grade R learner’s ability to count and grasp quantities, proportions and numbers. Verbal comprehension, logical thinking and concentration also play a part. All these abilities are important for satisfactory progress at school, particularly as far as mathematics is concerned.
Gestalt
Gestalt refer to physical structures, physiological and psychological functions or symbolic units. The ability to distinguish between letters of similar form, e.g. b and d, and to recognize the sequence of letters in words and of words in sentences, is to a certain extent dependent on the accurate perception of spatial position and relationships.
Co-ordination
The aim of this test is to evaluate the grade R learner’s motor skills. It provides an indication of the learner’s maturity and skill in using a pencil and paper, abilities which are essential for writing. Poor performance in the test could suggest future barriers to writing.
Memory
Non-intentional visual memory of the grade R learner is tested. For successful progress in the initial stages of school, the grade R learner has to rely to a considerable extent on visual memory.
Verbal Comprehension
This test evaluates the grade R learner’s ability to comprehend what is read, i.e. to understand the meaning of the word in the context of a sentence. This ability is called “Verbal Comprehension”
Comprehension of the spoken word(s) is an extremely important condition for the development of language. Verbal comprehension is an important index of a child’s potential for handling academic tasks.
ASB is available in all 11 official languages.
